As a biological concept, an adult animal or human is one who has fully grown. Within the human realm, adult is a reference to social and legal concepts. Contrary to the concept of a non-adult or "minor" legally adult has reached the age of majority. They are considered to be autonomous, self-sufficient and accountable. They are also known as "majors" They can also be thought as having reached the age of majority. The general consensus is that the age at which a person can legally become an adult is 18. However, this can vary depending on legal rights and countries as well as psychological development.

When a human reaches full intellectual and physical maturity, it is referred to as adulthood. Adulthood, as it is commonly understood, starts around the age of either 20 or 21. After middle age (starting about 40 years old) then comes older age (around the age of 60). The three main stages of adulthood are the early years (from the mid 30s until late 60s) mid-adulthood between mid-30s to late-60s and later adulthood (mid-60s through death). As we enter the initial phases of adulthood (between 20 and 40) the bodies of our children are at their peak of maturity although our height and weight might increase a bit. In the early years of our adulthood, we're physically at our peak. Muscle strength, response time, sensory ability, and cardiac function all reach their maximum.
